In Hegelian philosophy: the process by which the conflict between two opposed or contrasting things or ideas is resolved by the emergence of a new idea, which both preserves and transcends them.
Origin
Mid 19th century; earliest use found in Philip Schaff (1819–1893), theologian and historian. From German Aufhebung (in specific use in Hegelian philosophy, after similar use of the corresponding verb aufheben) from auf- + Hebung (from heben + -ung).
