Originally (in plural) from scientific Latin sexuales, plural, use as noun of masculine or feminine plural of post-classical Latin sexualis; in later use (in singular) apparently with loss of -s by confusion with the English plural ending -s, perhaps also influenced by the post-classical Latin neuter singular sexuale.
