Origin
Mid 17th century; earliest use found in Henry Hexham (fl. 1601–1650), soldier and author. After early modern Dutch peper-koeck (in Middle Dutch as peperkoeke; Dutch peperkoek); compare e.g. Middle Low German pēperkōke, German Pfefferkuchen, and similar compounds in other Germanic languages.
