Late 16th century (in an earlier sense). From Byzantine Greek αὐτόθεος very God (from ancient Greek αὐτο- + θεός God: see theo-) + -ism. With the 19th-cent. and later use in sense 2 compare German Autotheismus and French autothéisme, in same sense.
