One of the tones used in Gregorian plainsong in the recitation of Psalm 114 (113 in the Vulgate), and later adapted as an Anglican chant.
Origin
Early 17th century; earliest use found in John Dowland (?1563–1626), lutenist and composer. After post-classical Latin tonus peregrinus.
