Origin

Late 16th century (denoting an unauthorized trader trespassing on the rights of a trade monopoly): from inter- 'amid' + -loper as in archaic landloper 'vagabond' (from Middle Dutch landlooper).

  • An interloper was originally an unauthorized trader trespassing on the rights of a trade monopoly. The word was coined in the late 16th century, and is truly a hybrid. The first element derives from Latin inter ‘between, among’, while the second is extracted from landloper, an old word for a vagabond or tramp taken from Dutch.
