A type of polyarteritis affecting mainly medium-sized arteries, with the formation of nodules of inflammation in the vessel walls, often resulting in ischaemic damage to organs supplied by affected vessels (such as the heart, kidneys, bowel, and brain) and in aneurysm formation. Also (now more commonly) called polyarteritis nodosa.

Late 19th century; earliest use found in Frank Foster (1841–1911). From scientific Latin periarteritis nodosa from periarteritis + classical Latin nōdōsa, feminine of nōdōsus.
