Any of various, usually silver, coins or monetary units used in the Portuguese colonies of India, especially Goa, from the 16th to the 19th centuries, and usually said to be equivalent to 300 or 360 reis.
Origin
Late 16th century; earliest use found in Nicholas Lichefield (fl. 1582). From Portuguese †pardao from Indo-Persian partāb (perhaps in Konkani vernacular form partāv, with pronunciation partāo) from Sanskrit pratāpa splendour, brilliancy, majesty (occurring as a royal name on some of the coins); compare Hindi pratap.
