Origin
Mid 17th century; earliest use found in Inigo Jones (1573–1652), architect and theatre designer. From classical Latin peripteros having a single row of columns all round (Vitruvius), a building having a single row of columns all round (Varro) from Hellenistic Greek περίπτερος having a single row of columns all round from ancient Greek περι- + -πτερος.
