A small genus of shrubby aromatic plants of the family Lamiaceae (Labiatae), allied to the salvias, which are native to temperate central Asia and include several grown for their grey-green foliage and long spikes of blue or violet-blue flowers; especially Perovskia atriplicifolia, Russian sage; (also perovskia) a plant of this genus.
Origin
Early 20th century; earliest use found in Gardeners' Chronicle. From scientific Latin Perovskia from the name of Vasilij Alekseevič Perovskij, governor of the Russian province of Orenburg and Karelin's patron; compare -ia.
