Mid 17th century; earliest use found in Thomas Blount (1618–1679), antiquary and lexicographer. From classical Latin phagedaenicus of the nature of a phagedaena from Hellenistic Greek ϕαγεδαινικός from ancient Greek ϕαγέδαινα + -ικός. Compare French phagédénique.
