Early 20th century. From scientific Latin Phomopsis, genus (originally subgenus) name from Phoma, genus name (E. Fries Systema mycologicum I. p. lii; irregularly from ancient Greek ϕωΐς blister (attested only in plural, ϕωΐδες; of uncertain origin) + scientific Latin -oma) + -opsis.
