Any of various diseases resulting in the presence of white or silvery patches on the skin; especially (in later use) psoriasis.
Origin
Late 16th century; earliest use found in William Bullein (c1515–1576), physician. From classical Latin alphos skin disease from ancient Greek ἀλϕός dull-white leprosy, especially on the face from the same Indo-European base as classical Latin albus white.
