He worked as a photographer for the Farm Security Administration 1941–44 before becoming a photojournalist for Life magazine 1949–70. He wrote The Learning Tree (1963), Born Black (1971), and Shannon (1981) and directed the movies Shaft (1971) and The Super Cops (1974).
