Frequently with capital initials. The building in which a parliament meets. Now usually without article (except when referring to the parliament house of a country other than that of the speaker).
  • In England applied, in early use, to the (Old) Houses of Parliament at Westminster, which were replaced in 1852 by the new Palace of Westminster (now generally referred to as the Houses of Parliament). Also used of the building in Edinburgh where the Scottish Parliament formerly met, which now houses the Supreme Courts of Scotland but still retains the name, and applied to buildings housing the state or national assemblies of other countries where the legislature has the title ‘parliament’, as Australia, South Africa, etc..

Origin

Late Middle English; earliest use found in Promptorium Parvulorum. From parliament + house interjection.
