An American genus of fireflies (family Lampyridae); (also photuris) a firefly of this genus, especially Photuris pensylvanicus, which is common in eastern North America, especially in woodland, and has a dull yellow head and thorax and brown elytra with pale margins.

Mid 19th century. From scientific Latin Photuris, genus name from photo- + ancient Greek οὐρά tail + classical Latin -is.
