OriginLate 17th century; earliest use found in Samuel Pordage (bap. 1633, d. c1691), poet and translator. In some forms from post-classical Latin phryganeum, phryganium; in some forms from scientific Latin Phryganea (also as Phrygania), genus name, alteration of post-classical Latin phryganeum, phryganium caddis from either ancient Greek ϕρύγανον or medieval Greek ϕρυγανίς a dry stick, so called on account of the stick-like appearance of the larval cases. |
