Of a bryophyte: having the male and female reproductive organs in close proximity but not mixed, especially when the antheridia are in the axils of bracts immediately below those surrounding the archegonia.
Origin
Late 19th century; earliest use found in Bulletin of the Torrey Botanical Club. Either from ancient Greek πάροικος dwelling side by side + -ious, after dioecious, etc., or independently from para- + -oecious.
