A women's civil and human rights movement in South Africa. Originally and frequently attributive, especially in Black Sash Movement.
  • Originally known officially as the Women's Defence of the Constitution League, the Black Sash was founded in 1955. In the post-apartheid era its general membership was disbanded, but the organization has maintained its advice centres, and continues to serve as a human rights watchdog..

Origin

1950s; earliest use found in The Times. From black + sash, so called in allusion to the sashes worn during the movement's silent protest vigils.
