Origin

sense 2 from Afrikaans, from Dutch, literally 'head' (compare with cop2). sense 1 comes from the name of Spioen Kop, site of a Boer War battle in which troops from Lancashire led the assault (Liverpool then being part of Lancashire).

  • The Taylor Report after the Hillsborough disaster of 1989, in which 96 Liverpool fans were killed in a crush at the ground of Sheffield Wednesday FC, recommended that major soccer grounds in England should become all-seated, and spelled the end for the traditional terrace or kop. The original and best-known kop was the one at Anfield, home of Liverpool FC, which was known in full as Spion Kop. The name came from the site of a battle in 1900 during the Boer War, in which troops from Lancashire, including many from Liverpool, led the assault. In Afrikaans kop means ‘hill’, and so was an appropriate name for a high bank of terracing.
