1A region of NW Italy, in the foothills of the Alps; capital, Turin. Dominated by Savoy from 1400, it became a part of the kingdom of Sardinia in 1720. It was the centre of the movement for a united Italy in the 19th century. Italian name Piemonte.
2A hilly region of the eastern US, between the Appalachians and the coastal plain.
