A Christian religious movement and doctrine characterized by antitrinitarianism, rationalism, and denial of the divinity of Jesus. Also more generally: beliefs considered as characteristic of this movement, especially denial of the divinity of Jesus (frequently depreciative ).
- Socinianism arose in 16th cent. Poland as an early form of Unitarianism, being particularly associated with the Italian theologian Laelius Socinus (1525–62) and his nephew Faustus Socinus (1539–1604). Its tenets were stated in the Racovian Catechism of 1605..

Mid 17th century. From Socinian + -ism. Compare French socinianisme, and also post-classical Latin Socinismus.
