2Either of two porgies of shallow waters on the eastern and Gulf coasts of the United States: Lagodon rhomboides, which has a dark spot on the lateral line behind the gill cover, and (more fully spottail pinfish) Diplodus holbrooki, which has a black saddle on the caudal peduncle.

Mid 19th century; earliest use found in Henry Ward Beecher (1813–1887). From pin + fish, with reference to the sharp dorsal spines of these fishes.
