Steel wire having grooves along its length at regular intervals round the circumference, so that its cross-section has the shape of a cog wheel, and from which small pinions (especially for clocks and watches) can be cut.
Origin
Mid 18th century; earliest use found in James Anderson (1739–1808), agriculturist and political economist.
