释义 | Pip, Squeak, and Wilfred/ˌpɪp skwiːk (ə)n(d) ˈwɪlfrɪd/(also Pip, Squeak, and Wilfrid) informal noun A group of three objects or persons; specifically (a later nickname for) a series of three campaign medals or medal ribbons (the 1914–15 Star, the War Medal, and the Victory Medal) awarded to British soldiers during and at the conclusion of the First World War (1914–18). Origin1930s; earliest use found in Eric Partridge (1894–1979), lexicographer and etymologist. From the names of Pip, Squeak, and Wilfred, a trio of animal characters, respectively a dog, a penguin, and a rabbit, featured in a children's comic strip in the Daily Mirror from 1919 to 1955. |
