Any of several plants of the genus Encelia (family Asteraceae (Compositae)), comprising low-growing, drought tolerant shrubs of arid areas of southern America and Mexico; now especially E. farinosa, which has silvery foliage and bright yellow flowers.

Early 20th century; earliest use found in William Hornaday (1854–1937).
