Mid 17th century (in an earlier sense). From post-classical Latin pisticus, adjective designating nard (Vetus Latina, Vulgate) from Hellenistic Greek πιστικός (New Testament), perhaps ‘genuine, pure’, a sense of πιστικός faithful from ancient Greek πίστις faith + -ικός.
