Mid 19th century; earliest use found in The Southern Literary Messenger. From Partagas, the name of a brand of Cuban cigar, named after Jaime Partagas, who began marketing this brand of cigar under his surname in 1845. Until the late 20th cent. the form Partagas occurs in English only with plural meaning, with an inferred singular form Partaga.
