A variety of citron, Citrus medica var. sarcodactylis, in which the fruit consists of a cluster of yellow finger-like projections.
Origin
Mid 19th century; earliest use found in The Gentleman's Magazine. After Chinese fó shǒu gān, lit. ‘Buddha hand citron’.
