A reddish-brown amorphous mineral found in pegmatites which is an altered or metamict variety of zircon, with elevated concentrations of hafnium, rare earths, and radioactive elements.
Origin
Mid 19th century; earliest use found in Quarterly Journal of the Geological Society of London. From Danish alvit from the name of Alve, a locality in the Arendal district of southern Norway, where the mineral was first discovered + -it.
