Any of several crustose lichens of the genus Graphis or (more widely) the family Graphidaceae in which the apothecia form irregular patterns resembling hieroglyphics; also called scripture-wort.

Mid 19th century; earliest use found in John Lindley (1799–1865), botanist and horticulturist.
