Origin
Old English; earliest use found in Liturgical Texts (Durham Ritual). From classical Latin platanus plane tree from ancient Greek πλάτανος, alteration of an earlier form πλατάνιστος, perhaps from πλατύς broad, either because of its broad foliage or because of its flat bark.
