Originally: †(J. Lindleys's name for) a plant of the former family Alismaceae (now Alismataceae), comprising various aquatic and marshland monocotyledonous plants ( obsolete ). In later use (more widely): any plant of the order Alismatales.

Mid 19th century; earliest use found in John Lindley (1799–1865), botanist and horticulturist. From alisma + -ad.
