Late Middle English; earliest use found in Knyghthode and Bataile. From post-classical Latin plumbata (usually in plural plumbatae) scourge to which leaden balls were attached, missile weighted with lead, use as noun of feminine of plumbātus, past participle of plumbāre to weight with lead, to fasten with lead from plumbum lead.
