Frequently in plural. OriginMid 16th century; earliest use found in Nicholas Udall (1504–1556), schoolmaster and playwright. From plumb + -et, the textile probably being so called on account of its colour which resembles that of lead; compare Old Occitan plombet greyish-blue textile, although compare also Middle French (Flanders, Picardy) plommet official leaden seal affixed to textiles to certify their quality. Compare also Middle French (Pas-de-Calais) plommet (adjective) covered with a lead varnish. |
