1An abnormal, localized collection of air or gas in a part of the body, originally specifically in the scrotum, later especially in the lung parenchyma (usually resulting from previous infection or injury).

Origin
Late 16th century; earliest use found in John Banister (1532/3–?1610), surgeon. Partly from Middle French, French pneumatocèle abnormal collection of gas in the scrotum, abnormal collection of gas in an organ or its parenchyma, collection of air between the bones of the cranium and the periosteum, partly from post-classical Latin pneumatocele, and partly from their etymon Byzantine Greek πνευματοκήλη aneurysmal varicocele (from ancient Greek πνευματο- + -κήλη).
