OriginMid 19th century; earliest use found in John Lindley (1799–1865), botanist and horticulturist. From scientific Latin Podostemum from podo- + ancient Greek στήμων warp, thread, taken in sense ‘stamen’; so called on account of the two stamens with filaments united for about half their length. |
