A genus of dicotyledonous aquatic plants (the type genus of the family Podostemaceae), comprising plants with highly modified, mosslike foliage and inconspicuous flowers, occurring in tropical regions and North America where they are confined to swiftly flowing rivers; also (podostemon or podostemum) a plant of this genus.
Origin
Mid 19th century; earliest use found in John Lindley (1799–1865), botanist and horticulturist. From scientific Latin Podostemum from podo- + ancient Greek στήμων warp, thread, taken in sense ‘stamen’; so called on account of the two stamens with filaments united for about half their length.
