释义 | Scott, Winfield/skät / (1786–1866), US army officer; known as Old Fuss and Feathers. A hero of the War of 1812, he became supreme commander of the US Army 1841–61. During the Mexican War, he waged a victorious campaign from Veracruz to Mexico City in 1847. He ran for the office of US president as the Whig candidate in 1852 but was defeated by Democrat Franklin Pierce. |
