The arrest of cell division at the stage of metaphase, as a result of treatment with specific drugs which affect the mitotic spindle, such as colchicine, vinblastine, and vincristine.

1930s; earliest use found in Biological Abstracts. From French stathmocinèse, with remodelling of the ending after -kinesis.
