单词 | pokal |
释义 | pokal/pə(ʊ)ˈkɑːl/Now chiefly historical noun Originally: a large German goblet or tankard, usually made of glass, and often having a lid (now chiefly historical ). Now also: a large or stylized cup or other vessel used especially for ceremonial purposes. OriginMid 19th century. From German Pokal from Italian boccale mug, jug from post-classical Latin baucalis vessel for cooling wine or water from Hellenistic Greek βαύκαλις, of uncertain origin. The change of initial b- to p- in German was probably influenced by a perceived folk-etymological connection with classical Latin pōculum. |
