A genus of trees and shrubs of the family Euphorbiaceae, native to the Old World tropics, some members of which have strikingly large leaves; (also macaranga) a tree or shrub of this genus.
Origin
Mid 19th century; earliest use found in John Lindley (1799–1865), botanist and horticulturist. From scientific Latin Macaranga from Malagasy mokarana, a Madagascan species of the genus.
