(In the terminology of Stephen Hales) relating to processes and experiments in the natural sciences which supposed air to be ‘fixed’, i.e. rendered inelastic when used for respiration by living organisms or otherwise incorporated into the substance of animate or inanimate objects.
- The process was considered to be reversed on exhalation, decomposition, etc..
