A congenital anomaly in which there is abnormal extension of one or both angles of the mouth, caused by abnormal fusion of the maxillary and mandibular processes of the embryo.
Origin
Late 19th century; earliest use found in Charles Handfield Jones (1819–1890), physician and histologist. From macro- + ancient Greek στόμα mouth + -ia; compare xerostomia, French macrostomie.
