From ancient Greek πολυϕάρμακος knowing many drugs or charms, in Hellenistic Greek also given to the use of drugs or medicines, compounded of many drugs, (of countries) abounding in healing or poisonous herbs (from πολυ- + ϕάρμακον medicine: see pharmaco-) + -al.
