Origin

Early 20th century; earliest use found in American Anthropologist. FromMexican Spanish pascola from Yaqui pahko'ola (plural pahko'olam), lit. ‘old man of the ceremony’ from pahko ceremony + o'ola old man, perhaps influenced by Spanish Pascua Easter, owing to the fact that these dances were often performed at Easter time.
