Either of two galaxies (Maffei 1 and Maffei 2) near the galactic equator which are visible only in red and infrared light owing to the heavy extinction of shorter-wavelength light by interstellar dust.
Origin
1970s; earliest use found in Astrophysical Journal: Letters. From the name of Paolo Maffei, Italian astronomer, who described the galaxies in 1968.
