In communist countries, especially the Soviet Union: the planning of a school curriculum based on technical and vocational subjects; the process of educating children in the technical and industrial skills considered essential for the proper running of the State.

1930s; earliest use found in The Times Literary Supplement. From polytechn- + -ization, apparently after Russian politexnizacija (although this is first attested slightly later: recorded in dictionaries from 1937).
