A subordinate judicial officer of a district court; specifically (since 1990 as an official title) one who assists a district judge in preparing cases for trial, but who may adjudicate certain civil and criminal trials when both litigant parties agree.

Mid 19th century; earliest use found in Thomas Haliburton (1796–1865), politician and writer.
