More fully writ de magna assisa eligenda. A writ directing a sheriff to return four knights responsible for selecting twelve others and forming with them the jury of a grand assize to try a matter of right.

Early 17th century; earliest use found in John Cowell (1554–1611), civil lawyer. Shortened from post-classical Latin de magna assisa eligenda concerning the selection of a grand assize (lit. ‘concerning a grand assize [which is] to be selected’) from de concerning + magna, ablative singular feminine of magnus great + assisa, ablative singular of assisa + eligenda, ablative singular feminine of gerundive of eligere to select.
