Originally: a mineral, (Mg,Fe)Cr2O4, analogous to chromite (FeCr2O4), with magnesium replacing much of the iron. Now usually: a spinel of the general formula (Mg,Fe)(Cr,Al)2O4, specifically the endmember, MgCr2O4 (picrochromite).
Origin
Late 19th century; earliest use found in Edward Dana (1849–1935), mineralogist and physicist. From magnesium + -o- + chromite; introduced as a more transparent substitute for German Magnochromit, after earlier magnesioferrite.
